PHOENIX — Lately, Arizona State sophomore infielder Landon Hairston has been the talk of college baseball.

And despite No. 22 ASU’s (20-8, 5-4 Big 12) 9-5 loss falls short to WVU (19-5, 7-2 Big 12), Hairston once again made a splash on Sunday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Although he finished the game with only one hit, a solo home run, he provided some early fireworks with his leadoff homer. On just the second pitch of the Sun Devils’ first offensive frame, Hairston launched a ball to deep center field that ricocheted off the batter’s eye in center field. It marked his fourth-straight game with a home run.

“He’s (Hairston) done a great job, and he’s on another level right now compared to everyone else,” ASU coach Willie Bloomquist said. “He is kind of in that zone where he can go out and let him do his thing.”

Still, it was a quiet night for the sophomore compared to what he’s displayed as of late.

Hairston has excelled so far this season, but elevated to another level in the Sun Devils’ series against the Mountaineers. The lefty now has a team-leading 15 home runs, four of which have come in ASU’s weekend tilt against West Virginia.

Hairston stands at No. 5 in batting average (.458) in Division I, leading ASU to a No. 9-ranked team batting average in the country.

With plenty of the season left to go, he has already tied previous Sun Devil records.

In the first game of the series on Friday night, Hairston tied the program record in grand slams in a single season.

Now, ASU looks ahead to tomorrow, March 26, as it gets set to host San Diego State at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

“New start, new team,” Hairston said. “Every game counts, as we have seen in the past. Tomorrow we are going out there and giving it our best. I know these guys are good; they can play.”
