Facing the top-ranked team in the nation, Arizona State couldn’t pull off a stunner. The Sun Devils (6-2-2) fell to UCLA (12-0-0) 4-0 in Thursday night’s match in Los Angeles.
The Bruins stormed out of the gates, putting ASU’s defense on its heels quickly. A little over a minute into the game, UCLA forward Reilyn Turner netted a goal on Pauline Nelles on an assist from Ally Lemos.
UCLA’s early and relentless attack would not stop with Turner’s goal. Five minutes in, forward Ally Cook poured in another goal, giving the Bruins a very early two-goal lead.
ASU’s offense eluded them for the second straight game, only able to muster one shot in the first half and four in the second. Sun Devil star Nicole Douglas was once again bottled up. Douglas remains scoreless in the Pac-12 campaign.
The second half started similarly to the first, with UCLA scoring on a goal from Ally Lemos in the 49th minute. The Bruins bombarded Sun Devil keeper Pauline Nelles with 11 second-half shots. Madelyn Desiano added another late goal for the Bruins, building that lead up to 4-0 with 11 minutes left.
The Sun Devils will face another brutal test in Southern California on Sunday, facing the USC Trojans (7-2-1). The Trojans will be coming off their first conference loss of the season while the Sun Devils will try to get back into the win column.
The game kicks off at 12 p.m. in Southern California this Sunday.
