The Arizona State Sun Devils (2-3-1) walked away with a 2-0 victory in Pullman, Washington facing the Washington State Cougars (2-2-2). The match featured an uneven stat line, with the Cougars outshooting the Sun Devils 32-8.
Freshman goalkeeper Pauline Nelles continues to be a great asset to the Sun Devils, as she recorded three saves in the first half. One of these saves had Nelles leaping to the top corner of the goal to save a curving shot.
The game was in favor of the Cougars for the most part. Despite the score at 0-0, the Cougars outshot the Devils 11-3.
Graduate forward Olivia Nguyen led the attack coming out of the first half, putting up the first goal of the game by both teams. This goal would be the second of Nguyen’s season and making the score 1-0 for the Devils.
Nelles again showed off her talents as she saved back-to-back shots while spending a small amount of time out of the box. And then minutes later, another diving save from Nelles kept the score 1-0 for the Devils.
Later into the second half, Junior forward Hannah Leitner received an excellent pass and chiped the ball just over Washington State sophomore goalkeeper Nadia Cooper. It would be the first goal of the season for Leitner, putting the score at 2-0 for the Devils.
The Cougars failed to succeed in the constant offensive pressure they put on the Sun Devils. As a result, the Cougars ended the match with 32 shots, while the Sun Devils walked out of Pullman with only eight.
The Sun Devils (3-3-1) will travel west to face the Washington Huskies (2-5-1) on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. MST.
