On Thursday, the Sun Devil swim and dive team received the unfortunate news that its meet with Utah on Friday had been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols on the Utes end.
It wasn’t what the team or fans wanted to hear, especially since it was senior day. However, ASU would not let the seniors and team as whole go uncelebrated. Despite the competitive meet being canceled, Arizona State instead had an intrasquad meet showcasing the talent on both the women’s and men’s teams at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
This gave fans a chance to catch the teams one final time at home, especially seniors like Grant House, Erica Laning and Ruby Martin. A lively crowd showed up at Mona to see the meet, and they were treated to some great action.
Taylor Williams, Lindsay Looney, and Jack Little were the stars of the meet, posting the best times. Williams won the Men’s 100 meter breast with a time of 54.62. Looney came out on top the Women’s 200 meter fly with a time of 1:54.17, and Little took the Men’s 1000 meter freestyle with a time of 8:59.59.
It was a fun celebration for the seniors on senior day, and it gave the team valuable reps before hitting the road for the rest of the season. The next meet for the Sun Devils is against Stanford on January 21. After their date against the Cardinal, ASU will go up against California and rival Arizona to end the regular season.
After that, the Sun Devils will look forward to the Pac-12 Championships in Seattle, where the team can prove that it’s one of the best in the nation on a national stage. It’s been another great season for the Arizona State swim and dive team under Bob Bowman, and they’ll look to finish it off in style during the homestretch.
