After an unexpected loss against No. 3 Stanford (9-0-1, 2-0-0), the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-2-4, 1-1-1) found themselves in a loophole again as they tied 1-1 against the California Golden Bears (5-3-3, 2-0-1).
Even as Enasia Colon, the sophomore midfield/forward, scored her seventh and team-leading goal, it still was not enough to put away the Golden Bears.
Sophomore goalkeeper Pauline Nelles saved five goal attempts from the Golden Bears.
However, the Golden Bears did not hesitate to be aggressive with the ball as they scored in the 41st minute of the half. This was a surprising factor because starting defenders Olivia Coleman, Andrea Kraetzer, and Lauren Kirberg played the entire 90 minutes of the defensive end.
As the Sun Devils came into the second half of the game, Colon and junior forward Keri Matthews were able to combine for five of the Sun Devils eight shots.
Yet the Sun Devils allowed the California Bears to take eight of their thirteen shots and nine corner kicks to conclude the game.
Despite the Sun Devils drawing with the Golden Bears, they have the chance to redeem themselves Thursday back on home turf. They match up against the Washington Huskies at 7 p.m. MST.
