On Friday afternoon, the Arizona State Sun Devils hosted the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Sun Devils swept UNLV, winning 28 events for their first sweep of the 2023-2024 season. The final for the men was 229-71, while the women picked up their first win of the season with a final score of 230-70 against the Rebels.
To begin the day, the women swept the Rebels in the 400 Yard medley relay as they finished first, second and third. The relay team consisting of Charli Brown, Zoe Summar, Lindsay Looney and Erin Milligan placed first with a time of 3.31.18. While the ASU-B team took second and ASU-C took third.
As the women’s team gained their first win of the season, there were many stand-out performances, including one from Sophomore Charli Brown. Brown went 3-for-3 in her individual events: 100 Yard Backstroke (54.20), 200 Yard Backstroke (1:58:34), and 400 IM (4:13:56). Additionally, Brown was a part of the 400 medley relay that took first place.
“I definitely want to improve the little things,” Brown said. “I think we all have really built up this team and we all work so hard, but now I know I need to focus on the details and execute that every time and that’s how I’m going to get better”.
In the Women’s 1000-yard freestyle, Sophomore Deniz Ertan won the race with a time of 9:38.18. While freshman Alexa Reyna and Lia Csulak each took second and third place.
In addition to Ertan’s win, Sophomore Ieva Maluka won the 200 free with a time of 1:45.97 and the 100 fly with a time of 53.72. Additionally, she was a part of the 200 free relays that took first and was second in the 100 free with a. time of 49.55.
The Sun Devil men won their first event of the day with the relay of Hubert Kós, Léon Marchand, Ilya Kharun, and Filip SencSamardzic winning the race while Jack Wadsworth, John Heaphy, Alex Colson and Cam Peel took third.
While Brown went three for three on the women’s side, world record holder Léon Marchand did the same for the men’s team. In the 200 butterfly, Marchand swam a 1:39.65; in the 200 backstroke, he finished at 1:39.64, and in the 400 IM, he swam a 3:37.96. Marchand additionally won the 400 medley relay.
Other notable races on the men’s side include Graduate Student Jack Dolan, who individually won the 100 back with a 46.30 finish and the 100 free with a time of 42.75. Dolan was a part of the men’s 200 free relay that took first.
While junior Daniel Matheson won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:08.18, fellow junior Dylan Gravley took second with a time of 9:09.02, and Jake Mason took third with a time of 9:10.51.
Head coach Bob Bowman was pleased with the level of energy leading up to Friday’s meet.
“I felt like today was quite good. You know what we really talked about before the meet was we have to swim to our standard all the time, regardless of the conditions, the competition, and who’s in the pool, we need to swim that standard. We did quite well with that today, our relays were excellent,” Bowman said. “Our women were right off what we swam at Pac-12 last year. I’m super happy with that last relay. The women and the men are a second off our team relay, which is a very good relay, one of the best in history. I think we stepped it up through the whole meet”.
