The No. 13 Arizona State Sun Devils (4-1-1) left Oxford, Ohio winless as they tied the Miami of Ohio RedHawks (4-1-1) 1-1 in a game that saw extra time on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team showed up with their best effort. It was choppy for a majority of the game but the Sun Devils were able to play a little more in the offensive zone outshooting the RedHawks 31-24.

Each team had four power play opportunities, but neither was able to capitalize as the penalty kill remained perfect throughout the game.

RedHawks senior defenseman Robby Drazner ripped a shot low on the blocker side to open the scoring 10:36 into the first period. Senior forward PJ Fletcher and sophomore defenseman Michael Feenstra each picked up an assist.

Arizona State sophomore goaltender Gibson Homer made his NCAA debut in the contest and gave up the goal to Miami, resulting in the first time this season that the Sun Devils were down after the first period.

The Sun Devils came out with a jump in their step in the second period, being aggressive on the forecheck and forcing the RedHawks to turn pucks over and make mistakes.

Two minutes and 11 seconds into the second period, ASU senior forward Lukas Sillinger responded with a goal to even things up at one apiece. Sillinger picked up his third goal of the season and extended his point streak to five games. Senior forward Dylan Jackson collected his third assist of the weekend and extended his point streak to three games.

The Sun Devils maintained their intensity spending lots of time in the offensive zone. The Maroon and Gold were held to one goal in the second period because of the RedHawks’ ability to get in shooting lanes and block shots. ASU had a total of 71 shot attempts and the RedHawks finished the game with 26 blocked shots.

Homer started the third period with a few key saves in tight to keep the game knotted up at one.

The Sun Devils found themselves with a two-man advantage halfway through the third period. It was easy for them to enter the zone and set up the powerplay, an excessive amount of passes instead of putting pucks on net resulted in a missed opportunity to take the lead.

With five seconds left in the game, graduate student forward and captain Tyler Gratton took a goaltender interference penalty. RedHawks senior forward Matthew Barbolini retaliated with a cross-check. Both teams headed to overtime at even strength.

Each team had their fair share of chances in overtime but ultimately no one was able to find a way to score and pull out the victory for their club.

They ended off with a shootout in which the Sun Devils were able to come out on top but the game officially ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Sun Devils will look to get back to their winning ways as they return home to Tempe to take on the Stonehill College Skyhawks on November 3rd and 4th for Military Appreciation.
