ASU Track & Field: 4×400 Squad takes home gold

The Arizona State Track & Field team’s indoor season came to an end as only a few Sun Devils qualified for the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston Massachusetts.

The Sun Devils who qualified for the indoor championships were freshman sprinter Jayden Davis, graduate student sprinter Gamali Felix, senior sprinter Justin Robison, senior sprinter Kaleb Simpson, and alternate senior sprinter Denzell Feagin.

Robinson ran in the third heat of the 400-meter preliminary round and placed fifteenth overall with a time of 47.10 seconds.

Robinson sprinted out of his blocks within the opportunity to beat the other three competitors in this race to the pole, but fell short of the pole which caused him to lose a good amount of distance from the first place position.

Robinson tried to make up the distance to the first place position within the second lap of the race but fell short again to make up the distance when there were less than 80 meters of the race left.

In the third section of the 4×400 relay, senior sprinter Justin Robinson, senior sprinter Kaleb Simpson, freshman sprinter Jayden Davis, and graduate student sprinter Gamali Felix all managed to smash the facility record, get the NCAA-leading time, their seasonal best time, and a world-leading indoor time.

Robinson ran the initial leg of the relay and didn’t let anyone beat him to the pole, as he managed to set up his relay squad in a great position to win. Robinson battled out the last stretch of the first leg with a sprinter from the Florida Gators squad before passing the baton to Simpson.

Simpson held the lead throughout the whole time on the second leg of the relay, until yet again a sprinter from the Florida Gators would not go down without a fight within the last stretch of the leg before Davis took over.

Davis created some distance between himself and the competitors in this race as he successfully managed to pass it off to Felix.

Felix closed out the race as he battled with all the strength he had to make sure the Gators couldn’t catch up to the Sun Devils. He was the last leg of an impressive indoor season from the 4×400 squad which ultimately finished as the nation’s top unit.

The Sun Devils will soon look forward to their outdoor season, as they compete in the Aztec Invitational in San Diego from March 21-23.
