The Arizona State Sun Devils (12-1, 1-0 Big 12) 12-4 run to close out the third set propelled them to their fifth consecutive sweep and first-ever Big 12 conference win against the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (8-3, 0-1 Big 12) on Sept. 25.

Senior outside hitter Geli Cyr and graduate student setter Argentina Ung led the Sun Devils. Cyr totaled 18 kills, and Ung racked up 29 assists. The two combined for 27 points.

The first set started going back and forth until Arizona State took a 4-3 lead and never looked back. The Sun Devils took advantage of the Horned Frogs’ errors and took the first set 25-20.

Graduate student outside hitter Shania Cromartie and Cyr combined for nine kills in the first set. Ung recorded 12 assists in the opening set while also scoring an ace.

Early miscues for Arizona State had them trailing 4-1 at the beginning of set two. Horned Frog’s senior outside hitter Melanie Parra gave the Sun Devils problems throughout the match, especially in the second set, as she got six kills and a block.

However, Arizona State’s poise showed as they rode a late rally to a 25-22 set victory. Cyr added seven more kills. Ung added 10 more assists and scored two kills.

The Horned Frog’s freshman outside hitter Evan Hendrix’s domination for most of the third set led them to a 19-13 lead. While trailing in the third set, the Sun Devils’ experience shined as they clawed back to take the set 25-23.

Cry finished with an ace and a .429 hit percentage. Graduate student middle blocker Claire Jeter and Cromartie combined for 15 kills. Ung scored a .500 hit percentage.

Arizona State’s Texas trip is not over yet, as they will take on No. 19 Baylor Bears (9-3, 1-0 Big 12) on Sept. 27.
