Arizona State (8-7-3, 3-7-1 Big 12) ended its regular season with a senior night loss to rival Arizona Wildcats (11-5-2, 6-4-1 Big 12). The game’s lone goal came early, as freshman forward Narissa Fults scored in the 11th minute.

The Sun Devils struggled to capitalize. Despite controlling the ball for much of the game, they were only able to register three shots on goal. Arizona flustered its offense by applying aggressive pressure all 90 minutes.

ASU’s defense kept the game close. Holding the Wildcats to just one goal is impressive, as they scored five on Kansas State a few days prior. ASU head coach Graham Winkworth says the Sun Devils athleticism was the reason for their success.

“We were able to match them physically,” Winkworth said. “Normally, we struggle to match Arizona.”

Tonight’s game was not just the last regular season game; it was also senior night. Although it did not turn into points, the efforts of seniors Olivia Coleman, a defender, and forward Keri Matthews made a significant difference on the field.

Now that the regular season has concluded, the Sun Devils will compete in the Big 12 tournament. Earning the 10th seed, they have also earned another shot against the seven-seed Wildcats. The team will have to make adjustments to capitalize on its opportunities. Freshman forward Kierra Blundell believes ASU is not far behind the Arizona women.

“I honestly think that we were the better team,” Blundell said. “It’s just coming down to who’s gonna finish the chances.”

The rematch between rivals is essential for either team to reach its season goals. The Sun Devils will likely need a deep run at the Sprouts Farmers Market Big 12 Championship to have a chance to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

The Sun Devils take the field against the Kansas University Jayhawks Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. PST in Kansas City, Missouri.
