Another slow start pushed Arizona State women’s basketball’s (8-19, 2-13 Big 12) losing streak to 12 after an 82-66 loss against No. 10 TCU (25-3, 13-2 Big 12) on Wednesday night.

Despite ASU graduate student guard Tyi Skinner’s game-high 25-point performance, the Sun Devils failed to keep pace with the Horned Frogs’ offense.

Going into the midweek matchup, the Horned Frogs averaged 19.4 assists per game. They surpassed this total against the Sun Devils, as TCU dished out 23 assists and notched its 14th game with 20 or more assists on the season.

In addition to being a great passing team, the Horned Frogs entered the evening leading the country in 3-pointers made (268).

However, the Sun Devils managed to slow down their normal barrage of threes. The maroon and gold held the Horned Frogs to just seven 3-pointers on 31.8% shooting from beyond the arc.

Additionally, ASU took care of the basketball. For just the second time this season, the Sun Devils limited their turnovers to below double digits.

As the regular season approaches its end, the ASU hopes to carry these positives into the Big 12 tournament.

“If that is what we show against the No. 10 team in the country, we need to carry that over the remainder of the season,” head coach Natasha Adair said. “Then when we get to the conference tournament, we are 0-0.”

In the first quarter, the Horned Frogs jumped out to a swift 10-point lead. The Horned Frogs sophomore guard Donovyn Hunter led the way with six points and three assists.

Sparky closed the gap in the second quarter. Junior guard Jalyn Brown tallied nine points, and Skinner nailed a buzzer-beating three to head into the half down seven.

“I think anytime you hit a shot to end the half it kind of drains the other team and gives us momentum heading into the second half,” Skinner said.

Yet, any momentum built by the Sun Devils in the second quarter was dismantled in the second half by the Horned Frogs senior guard Madison Conner. She scored 11 points in both the third and fourth quarters, which helped the Horned Frogs pull away.

Conner scored all 11 of her fourth-quarter points in the final four minutes to ice the game for the visitors. TCU’s star guard also accounted for 22 of the team’s 40 points in the second half.

The Horned Frogs snatched their 25th win of the season with the victory on Wednesday night. It’s tied for the most in a season in program history.

From holding open tryouts last year to now making school history, TCU head coach Mark Campbell has flipped the program upside down.

“It is a testament to these kids,” Campbell said. “They have been able to come together and play this game at a high level.”

Looking ahead, both teams have three regular-season games left before the Big 12 Tournament. ASU will look to snap its losing skid this weekend as it travels up to Provo, Utah, to take on BYU (13-13, 4-11 Big 12) on Saturday at 4 p.m. MST.

“This is a group that is still fighting, this is a group that is not checked out, this is a group that is hungry,” Adair said.
