TEMPE – Arizona State found itself winning another game at home on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 67-51, as ASU dominated the interior game while continuing to show poise and execute coach Molly Miller’s brand of rebounding and defense.

With both the Sun Devils and the Jayhawks competing in the Big 12 conference, this game was a crucial midseason battle for both teams. For the Sun Devils, they were coming off their worst loss of the season on the road to TCU, while the Jayhawks were hoping to break a three-game losing streak.

“I always think of Coach Miller whenever I go into a game,” Redshirt junior forward Deborah Davenport said. “She is always saying,  ‘Be the spark of the bench, so I try to be the energy.’”

With constant lead changes throughout the entire game, both teams really showed how badly they wanted this win. Arizona State now stands at 17-2 overall, and Kansas has a record of 11-8.

ASU showcased great teamwork and sportsmanship on the offensive side. Sophomore forward Heloisa Carrera led the team with a career high 22 points, adding an impressive 10-12 clip on free throws.

Along with Carrera having a big game, the Sun Devils had more stars. Graduate guard Gabby Elliot dropped 20 points while going 7-8 from the line.

Both teams played a really aggressive game throughout all four quarters. The game had a total of 39 fouls. Nine of the fouls came from the first quarter, setting the tone for how the rest of the game was played.

“You’ve got to be aggressive, to be able to be on the floor, you’ve got to be consistent,” Miller said.  “If four people are playing hard and one isn’t, you stick out like a sore thumb”.

Miller, having her season breakout as a head coach, is currently leading the Sun Devils to their best start in program history. This is her first year with ASU after leaving GCU her previous coaching year.

Still with plenty of season left to go, she has the opportunity to compete for the Big 12 title under her name.

“I think they understand the importance of every game,” Miller said. “We keep talking about this, every opponent matters. No matter what time of year it is. We already have this March Madness feel”.

Arizona State starts a two-game road trip next Wednesday as it takes on West Virginia and then Cincinnati next Saturday.
