Eight Sun Devils made the NCAA wrestling tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. Session one of the tournament is in the books.
ASU started the day winning their first six matches, but would go 1-2 in their next three matches to close out the first session 7-2. In team standings, ASU is in 12th place with 8.0 team points.
ASU Session 1 Match results:
125 lbs No. 8 Richard Figueroa (12-5)
Round 1- ASU Richard Figueroa won by major decision 13-2 over Army’s No. 25 Ethan Berginc.
Figueroa’s next match will be against Minnesota’s No. 9 Patrick McKee.
133 lbs No. 24 Julian Chlebove (18-8)
Round 1- ASU Julian Chlebove upset win by decision 4-1 over UNCO’s No. 9 Dominick Serrano.
Chlebove will take on Iowa State’s No. 8 Evan Frost in his next.
141 lbs No. 14 Jesse Vasquez (9-2)
Round1- ASU Jesse Vasquez won by decision 5-2 over Lehigh’s No. 19 Malyke Hines.
Vasquez will face Iowa’s No. 3 Real Woods in his next match.
149 lbs No. 2 Kyle Parco (21-3)
Round1- ASU Kyle Parco won by decision 5-4 over Pitt’s No. 31 Finn Solomon.
Parco will face Appalachian’s No. 18 Cody Bond in his next match
157 lbs No.2 Jacori Teemer (21-3)
Round 1- ASU Jacori Teemer won by decision 7-3 over Little Rock’s No. 31 Matty Bianchi.
Teemer’s next match will be against San Diego State’s No. 15 Cael Swensen.
174 lbs No. 33 Cael Valencia (11-13)
Pig-tail round- ASU No. 33 Cael Valencia won by decision 5-0 over Purdue’s No. 32 Brody Baumann.
Round 1- ASU Cael Valencia falls 14-3 to Virginia Tech’s No. 1 Mekhi Lewis.
Valencia moves to the wrestleback side of the bracket. His next match will be against Wisconsin’s No. 17 Max Maylor.
184 lbs No. 31 Tony Negron (13-9)
ASU Tony Negron falls 2-1 to Minnesota’s No. 2 Isaiah Salazar.
The difference in the match, Salazar got the riding time point. Negron will move to the wrestleback side of the bracket where he will face Pitt’s No.15 Reece Heller.
HWT No. 4 Cohlton Schultz (9-1)
ASU Cohlton Schultz wins by decision 10-3 over Nebraska’s No. 29 Nash Hutmacher.
Schultz will take on Rutger’s No. 13 Yaraslau Slavikouski later tonight.
ASU has six wrestlers in the Championship side of the bracket: Figueroa, Chlebove, Vasquez, Parco, Teemer, and Schultz.
ASU has two wrestlers in the wrestlebacks side of the bracket: Valencia and Negron.
Session 2 starts tonight at 4 p.m. AZT.
